Assignment 2

For this assignment I have been asked to make the following changes to the software Microsoft Word. I have to change the desktop which inlcudes minimising things so that it will only appear when the user clicks on the menu name, add font style to the quick access tool bar and then changing the background colour to blue and text to white so that it will be displayed more clearly. Finally I have to change the default display to a higher resolution.

Minimising the ribbon

Moving font to QAT ( Quick Access Toolbar)

Page and text colour

Default display

Narrator

Magnifier

I received a phone call from a friend and she asked me to help her make some changes to her home  computer as her son is visually impaired. By me making some changed this then makes it easier for her son to learn and be able to us the computer. I agreed to help her as this will then support her sons disability.

(Minimising the ribbon)

I minimised the ribbon in word documents. When minimised it then appears on the border at the top of the screen which contains the font size, colour, font type and the rest of the tools which allow you to add or change anything in your word document. Above I have explained what the ribbon is and what it does. I then explained how to minimise the ribbon using screenshots to show step by step instructions on how to do that and then what the ribbon looks like when minimised. Once opening a new word document the son will only see the blank page which is a benefit for him as he will be more concentrated on the document rather than the ribbon with all the different tabs on the top of the screen. If wanting to see the ribbon pointing your mouse over the hidden ribbon will make it re-appear but once removing your mouse from the ribon it will then disappear.

(Moving font to QAT ( Quick Access Toolbar)

The second thing that I had to do was to add the tab font to the quick access toolbar. Above I showed scrrenshots of what to do and how to move it over so it would be easier to access. You can add as many icons as you want and they are easily removed as they are added. I think this would be a major benefit as it sames him looking through the ribbon for one specific icon and then getting confused. On the other hand, having it in the ribbon which is just above the document is useful as it is at direct eye contact and causes less disruption.

(Page and text colour)

I then was asked to change the background and text colour of a document. I changed the background colour to blue and then changed the text to the colour white. I done this as it would be more understanding to read rather than reading black writing on a white background with abit of blue aswell. So having the background blue and text white makes it more easier to read as the white text stands out from the blue background which is very helpful for person who has damaged vision.

(Default display)

I changed the screen resolution to a bigger size so that the content on the screen would be more easier to read and focus on. I decided to change this because the text on the screen can be quite small and hard to read so by changing the screen resolution it makes it easier for him to see screens content.

(Narrator)

Also I have been asked explain about the Narrator. This program is to help people identify an find out what certain things are on the desktop and computer and find out how to use it. When using the Narrator a voice speaks out from the speakers indicating.

(Magnifier)

Finally I have been asked to explain the magnifier. This is a program which is already installed unto your computer. On the screenshots above I have explained how top open it up and how it works. It has lots of different settings and is used to magnify your screen and anything your pointer is on. It can zoom into anything as much as 1600%. Your pointer can turn into a mini magnifying glass or you can have it sitting as a min window at the side of your screen. The magnifier is a great help for people whose vision is damaged. This software makes the text and content much more easier to see and read which will let the given user perform their tasks in their own way.

Why I made changes

The reason to why I have made these changes to MS Word, desktop and the display is because it will help people who are visually impaired. Making these changes will benefit these people as it is much more easier to see and access the information, also it will support their abilitly to learn. All the other changes that I have made and explained are all a great help when talking about children with visual problems and simple changes like these can change their education.
